Mountain Gorillas In The Zoological Garden

San Diego, California 1931-1940. On October 5, 1931, two young gorillas were received by the San Diego Zoo from Martin and Osa Johnson. The Zoo believed they were Mountain Gorillas (Gorilla gorilla beringei). Based on a paper by author Don Cousins, Classification of captive gorillas (International Zoo Yearbook, Vol. 14, 1974 pp 155-159) these two males were probably Eastern lowland gorilla (G.g. graueri).
