He was not a sociologist, not a naturalist, and the zoo world was different, the whole world was different. When George Vierheller started at the St. Louis Zoo, there was no major international conservation program anywhere in the world. There was no perceived need. The human population was only a billion and a half at the most, rather than today’s seven billion. It was a very different life, much better for the animals.
